Kubernetes

"Kubernetes is an open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications."

  • Kubernetes means ship pilot, so think of Kubernetes as the pilot on a ship of containers.
  • Kubernetes also referred to as k8s, as there are 8 characters between k and s.
  • Inspired by Google Borg System, a container manager for its global operations for more than a decade.
  • Written in Go/Golang

Where it came from

So as I was telling that there are people say companies who are using containers for years even before Docker. Before Docker Google was running its most of service like search, Gmail, Google File System etc on containers.

Google used First Borg for managing container cluster and then lator with time it started using Omega and today it is using Kubernetes for all its Orchestration Though kubernetes is built from scratch, still the idea behind the Kubernetes is from Borg and Omega.
